TIGER IN HONG KONG
The other day, someone reported a huge shark in local waters. Shark stories are more reliable than some of the tiger stories which occasionally come from the New Territories (the "Peak Tiger" scare is now definitely dead) but there was a time when Master Stripes was a not uncommon visitor to the mainland, and he was even "reported" from the island. Here is an extract from a newspaper report of 1873. The Hong Kong Times of October 10, that year, states.
"A correspondent writes us:-
"On going round the road past the race-course this morning (October 8), I was startled to hear from one of the villagers close to the village school, that a tiger had been seen for some days prowling about the place. The man pointed out to me the foot-prints on the sand extending above the stream (from the ravine on the western side of the hills close to Mr. Ruttonjee's flower garden. I have seen foot-prints of tigers in Singapore and I am sure those I have seen in the Happy Valley belong to the specie. I understand also that Mr. Stripes has visited "Little Hongkong" and enjoyed a good meal in the shape of dogs... and pigs".
It is to be presumed that the correspondent's news was without real foundation, for I have been unable to trace any further reference to this tiger.
